For those of you who use plastic buckets for nesting boxes - How much of the lid do you use in the front? If I remember correctly someone said to use half. When I made them I thought that half was too much so I used about a third. Everything is fine except that they kick out alot of sawdust. Any suggesdtions?

I didn't think about using the lids. I have a 2x4 in front of the buckets.

Quote:Sorry, My camera is not technologically advanced to post pix, but you really don't need pixs. Just 5 gal buckets on their side. Some people say the darker colors are better. If you want to minimize nesting material loss than you would need a low barrier in front of the bucket(s). You want to make sure that they won't roll. It's kind of funny as some of the hens sit face in, in the buckets, and some sit face out.

Backyard Poultry magazine had an article on this a while back. You might do a search on their site in order to get pictures and instructions. It's www.backyardpoultrymag.com

We usually leave about half maybe slightly less.

We used about a third of the lid and it works just fine. For some reason my girls don't like shavings in the next box, they keep kicking them out. So far though I haven't gotten any broken shells. I thought about trying straw or something else and see if they like it, but haven't yet. The instructions, with lots of good photos, was in the April/May 08 issue of Backyard Poultry. Hopefully it is archived online.
