Please describe how you clip your chickens flight feathers.

I have white leghorn chickens and was clipping their wings like I always do, but tonite I clipped them and one chicken had 2 feathers that started bleeding, I wrapped them and brought it in the cage inside for the nite. Did I hurt it? Did I do something wrong? I feel so bad and have clipped their wings since I got the first ones 1 1/2 years ago and never had this happen.
 
They were growing in new feathers called blood feathers at that stage because there are still blood vessels in the shaft of the feather. It should be fine. I usually just check the underside of the wing before I start cutting, you can usually tell the blood feathers, especially in a white chicken.
