Yesterday morning when letting the hens out of the coop, we noticed that one of our Easter Eggers has a swollen eye. The eye still looks about the same today, and we can tell it bothers her. She looks a bit pale. Otherwise she appears to behave the same, eats and scratches like herself, jumps onto our back when we go in the run to see her.

Please see the picture of her left swollen eye. Is this something concerning? What can we do to treat it? Does it look like an injury or an infection?

Thanks!

A swollen face can be a sign of mycoplasma gallisepticum or MG, a chronic respiratory disease. Tylan injectable given orally or Tylosin powder in the water can be used to treat symptoms. Do you see any bubbles or foam in the eye or watery eyes, nasal drainage, or noisy breathing?

We have not seen any bubbles or foam in the eye, no watery eye, no nasal drainage or noisy breathing. Would MG make both eyes swollen or just one eye? Thanks!

Usually only one eye is swollen, but it can spread to both eyes. If you treat with Tylosin or Tylan, and symptoms improve, that could be a respiratory disease. Since her eye looks squinty, it could have been pecked or she could have something in her eye. Look around, put some saline or eye wash into the eye. Terramycin eye ointment or plain triple antibiotic ointment can be used as well.
