I have a 5week old duckling. At some point today, she somehow injured her neck, I believe. It's not limp, she's walking, running, and even swimming fine, but she seems to be in pain. She is holding her head very close to her body, and has slight swelling on her shoulder. (It could just be the angle that she's resting her head) she cannot Bend down to eat or drink, but she was trying. I raised her dishes, and she is eating and drinking fine. Anyone have an idea what could be going on?? I live in a city, and our vets do not specialize in, what they consider, "exotics". Any help, please!![IMG]. Not the best picture, but she stays in that position

It may be an injury. If that's the case, it may just take some time.

But I suppose it could be a neurological problem, and sometimes ducklings respond well to extra niacin and possibly other B vitamins.

Here is something I wrote about boosting vitamin B levels for ducklings.

People often get confused about what to use, so please stick with me here [IMG].

    You have some options.

I would go with brewer's yeast. Forgive me for using capital letters, but for anyone else who may casually look over this thread, NOT baking yeast, NOT winemaking yeast. Brewer's yeast is a nutritional supplement and it provides niacin and a few other vitamins.

Generally, folks who supplement with brewer’s yeast use a tablespoon per cup of food.

Ducklings need about three times the niacin chicks do. And some ducklings get leg problems or seizures if they don't have enough niacin.

If you cannot find the brewer's yeast, or if you happen to have (here come the capital letters again, please forgive me) PLAIN niacin - NOT no-flush, NOT timed release, then dissolve 150 mg niacin per gallon of water for the duckling’s drinking water.

Another approach is to use B Complex capsules, and use the B3 - niacin - levels as a guide. Again, 150 mg B3 per gallon of drinking water.

Keep the little one on the supplements for about 8 weeks.

Sometimes it only takes a few days to see improvement.

You can also see how it went for Qwackers and Bentley from these threads.

. Thank you so, so much for your feedback! These are my first ducks, I have been in tears since I discovered it. One question, the Niacin the same as I would purchase for human use, or do I need to go specialty??

Human quality is fine. Just keep the dosages low compared to human dosages.

I don't have the numbers on hand, and I'm on my phone or is look them up!

The dosages in my post are from Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks, so I think we are covered. [IMG]

@dotknott - I didn't want to embarass you, rather to reassure you. And early morning using a phone . . . well, I can relate. One of my big challenges is when I only have the phone and cannot find my glasses. Oy. At least BYC lets me enlarge the image. Some sites don't.....

And I am always grateful for your help on the forum [IMG]

    Not embarrassed in the slightest!

Though I may have to limit my posts to the post-coffee hours.
