My polish crested laid her first egg 2 weeks ago. It was a large egg and had a lot of blood on it. She hasn't laid another egg since. She is eating and drinking and behaving normally. Is this normal for this breed? When should I start to worry if she hasn't laid another egg? She is my grandson's chicken he somehow came home with from the farm store so I really don't want anything to happen to her. But I know nothing about this breed. I have easy breezy reds and barred rocks that I never have to worry about. Lol

hehe it sounds like he shoplifted it... lol. not suggesting he did of course, it's just something silly that pops in my head.

The polish, I have many, are not lay every day chooks at all. When mine are laying their hearts out I think about every second day is ok, but they don't lay their hearts out. They just seem to lay semi random. I haven't seen blood on their eggs myself. It's somewhat unusual. You say a large egg, how large ? I find my polish lay eggs that could pretty much go unnoticed in a bowl of chicken eggs. they are about 80% the size of chicken eggs maybe less... and they are a little bit slender compared to chicken eggs.

I think I helped trigger them laying more eggs by improving their coop and yard ( moving it to a much more interesting green and temperate are of the back yard ) they lay, they stop, they pick up again. Look out for egg eating, try to keep some fake nest with fake eggs in it to attract their egg lying attention.

She is the only one who lays white eggs so I'm sure it was her egg. I would say the egg was the size of the eggs in the store that are XL. I was shocked because I was expecting a very petite egg from her for her first egg. I have also wondered if it has something to do with her age. She is not quite 10 months yet and I think I read that a lot of Polish don't lay their first egg until a year.

Now that all the snow has melted they are able to be let out to roam a couple hours a day so maybe that will help trigger her. Though they have a large coop and run, I know the being confined all winter really slows down my others.

Sounds like her egg-laying machinery is still sorting itself out.
