The electrical cord on my pond failed last winter - I was never here so I failed to notice that the deicer wasn't working - all the fish died. I drained it and dredged it this spring and it's been sitting there with the filter running but no fish. I didn't want to spend the $3-$4 a fish to repopulate. There was a lady giving away free pondfish on Craigslist but when I got there she expected me to catch them myself- tiny fish in a huge pond and a short handled net. So I saw some feeder comets at SuperPetz for 19 cents each- got a dozen and brought them home. I thought, well, at least I am saving them from being feeder fish.

Then I noticed that I have a snapping turtle living in my pond.

Sigh.

I had some comets and a koi. They died because there was no oxygen - the deicer wasn't running and the surface froze solid. They can survive being frozen, but not the lack of oxygen.

Get rid of the turtle

about 3 feet at the deepest. but the bottom was pretty mucky so that may have made it more shallow. The fish survived about 4 winters in that pond. This is the first year I had a problem. The deicer doesn't melt much of the ice, just enough to let some air in.
