I am setting up my coop this weekend and it is going to be on a cement slab. Trying to think how i can have a large dirt area in there for dust bath, scratching. I was thinking of using a plastic pond and fill with dirt/ sand and then pine on top of the concrete in the other part of the run. Anyone done this? Good or bad idea? The pond sits 18" tall.

[IMG]Hi! And Welcome to BackYardChickens!!!! I'm setting up my new chicken yard as we speak and I'll be putting a kiddy wading pool from Family Dollar in there for the dust bath. We'll be adding a mix of dirt, wood shavings and diatomaceous earth.

18" tall shouldn't be a problem for an adult bird but juveniles may not be able to access the dust bath unless you provide a ramp/ladder for them. Good Luck!!

Really, this is a brilliant idea...18 inches for adults...and sure, put stones around (solidly), you don't want babies getting hurt...or a small stump out side for them to jump up on and then into the pool...it is gonna look GREAT!!

Wood ash is a good additive...fireplace or wood stove or outdoor firepit...very good for chickies...and for extra dirt if needed, bagged topsoil...mine love that....
