Poor sick chick

We have a chick that hatched yesterday and I have become it’s surrogate mother. There is something wrong with her/him. It didn’t absorb all its yolk and I’ve been feeding it with a syringe. It chirps and attempts to move and it’s finally fuzzy but it looks off. P

Apply antibiotic ointment to the remaining yolk and give the chick some electrolytes. Very frequently such chicks develop systemic infections.

Well I wouldn’t force feed it yet as they don’t eat for a couple of days. Keep it clean and dry. It could survive but infection is your number one worry at this point. Maybe try to put some sort of bandage over it but leave a gap so it can dry out.

Our chick looks 100% better this morning. He/she is running around and chirping for me. When he sees my hand he quites. He is peaking at food. He still had yolk hanging though so I’m not sure I should put him/her with the others yet.

I thought our chick was doing better but then it started not moving as much last night and this morning and making clicking sound when it was breathing it was also having a hard time moving around it looked like a bobble head and it kept getting flip onto it’s back and unable to right itself. I wish I knew what was wrong with it. It started pooping completely liquid light brown poop and slimy stuff came out it’s beak before it passed away in my hand. It was heartbreaking but I don’t know what else I could have done. Does anyone know what might have been wrong so I might be better prepared in the future? Thanks

Most likely an infection or parasite in the lungs. The liquid feces could have been from the sickness or because it was to hot. Did it have a place to get away from the heat lamp? Did it have access to food and water 24/7?

Yes it had access to food and water and the ability to get away from the heat lamp. It actually spent most of its time with me or with its chick buddy in a small pen separate from the others since it’s mother tried to kill it.
