I am working on converting a shed to a coop and I have a question about the size of the pop door. My existing (soon to be much too small) coop has a 12" h x 9" w pop door. I don't think that woud be adequate for the JG chick I currently have in my family room. ;)

So what size pop door should I have for a JG?

My pop door is 18" wide by 22" tall. My Brahma Roo (who is quite large) has no problem getting in and out at all...

Thank you for your answer! :)

My Brahma hen can get through my existing 12 x 9 pop door, but I'm building a new coop and have a 3 week old JG in my family room. I'd like to have an automatic pop door but I'm not sure any of them would be big enough.

You inspired me, I just bought a Black Jersey Giant Pair and put them in the coop with my pop door... :)

LOL!

So now I'm just a victim of chicken math but a purveyor.

Hi,

Did you get any other answers? What size did you have in the end? Do you think 18" x 12 " is big smooth or does it need to be larger?

Thanks

Jane

I have to admit I am not familiar with Jersey Giant Poultry. My pop door is also coincidentally 9x12".

I have raised Meat King Roosters in this coop and they managed my door with no issues and room to spare.

Also I might add a 35 lb raccoon was able to get through the window in the door of my coop and escape with a laying hen. (He only did that once I will say).

If your chick came from a hatchery don't worry about it getting too huge for a normal sized pop door. Hatchery Jersey Giants don't get as big as birds bred by serious JG breeders. 9x12 should be big enough.
