building a new coop for buff orpingtons im thinking of making pop door 12'' x 12'' but not sure if that would be large enough for a large breed of chicken.
 
Mine are all 12" x 12" I have had everything from bantams in there to Light Brahma, Light Sussex and American Buff Geese. They will squeeze in. Just make sure you have plenty of (other) sources of ventilation. I actually cover mine in the winters with canvas tarps that I cut into strips and hang over the pop holes. It allows (some) air-flow but blocks some of the winds, too.

I think 12 x12 would work just fine. I would recommend cutting your pop door 8-10 " up from you coop floor if you are going to use the deep litter method. I only cut it about 6" off the floor wish it would have been twice that height. My pop door is only 9X12 and accommodates this big guy no problem.
