Hi everyone! I'm a new chicken mom and am looking for some advice. I got 3 buff orpington chicks from a local Agway two days ago. One of them would not eat or drink on her own and was very weak and sleepy, but chirped almost constantly when awake. We were able to get her to drink some electrolyte/vitamin water the first day, and on the second day she ate a small amount of food that had been soaking in water most of the day. I started noticing on the second day (when she was a little more alert) that she frequently walked into things, stepped into the waterer, and mostly chirped when the other chicks were not next to her. When one of our cats put her paw up on the side of the aquarium right next to her, she didn't react all, while the other two chicks looked panicky and moved as far away from the cat as they could. Late last night, she began pecking for the first time, but after pecking at the ground, she started pecking in the air all around her (with her mouth closed). Today, she has been pecking almost non-stop, but I've noticed that every time she pecks, she moves backwards (away from the food), often in a circular motion. She also often accidentally pecks her friends when going for food. I usually cup my hand behind her and help aim her at the food so she can actually get some. Has anyone had a baby chick act this way? Am I totally crazy for thinking she might be blind? I'm also wondering if she might have some vitamin deficiency that could explain some of her weird body movements. She generally walks forwards, and only does the backwards thing when pecking for food. Any advice is much appreciated! Thank you!
