We now have a second laying pullet who laid her first egg today! She kinda pecked at it a bit,my mother kinda panicked so I took it out. I would have left it in there to see if she would break it. Is it normal for chickens to peck at there eggs for a bit without the intention of eating?

Yes, they will peck at things they are curious about. Have some golf balls in the nest so when they peck at them, it's not a pleasant feeling.

Got it. They lay white eggs but the only golf ball I have easy access to is orange, the white ones are in the attic, does color matter?
