I spent all this time designing and building a coop and run for the chicks and realized I have no idea how to prepare the soil. They're going into the back yard soon. I used to use this area with raised beds for gardening. It's an 8x12 area. The dirt is mostly organic debris, dried leaves, weeds and soil. Not to mention lots of buggies and webs among other thing. What should I put on the bottom? Shavings? Hay? Mulch? I'd like to keep it just dirt if I can but dunno if there's anything I need to do to make it chicken-friendly. I have a bag of DE.... Just need help in the right direction. Thanks!

[IMG] made some progress today, moved the raised bed, started constructing the pen. It's not "dry" dirt. Its not mud either. It's moist soil.
