I am interested in preserving heritage breeds. This would also be a project for my 2 year old to begin learning responsibility. What are the best heritage breeds and which are the ones in most need of preservation?

You need to be over on the BYC "Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II " thread.

That is its purpose. To help folk wanting to do what you want decide on a breed(s) and then help source them superior birds bred to the APA Standard of Perfection. Lots of experienced folk there waiting to help. Come on over and jump right in and introduce yourself.
See you there,
Best,
Karen and the Light Sussex in western PA, USA

My suggestion is talk to thedragonlady about her buff Orpingtons-- these are the easiest tempered birds I have. I bought mine from another source, but would definitely feel confident buying good ones from her.
