Pretty sure this is a boy; clueless as to the breed

    Its definetely a boy, looks like a mixed breed.

    it must be a cross with a silkie and maybe a rose comb

    Thanks for the welcome. I never considered a silkie mix. I have this other rooster that I know for sure is a mix of something. I have no idea what; the people I got him from said they didn't even know. Here is a picture (he is in the front) if anyone wants to guess. You can't really tell here, but some of his tail feathers have a bluish-green tint to them. Thanks for your replies. [​IMG]

    The bluish one looks like a Blue Ameraucana/Silkie mix to me, but it's hard to really say with genes. Sometimes they mix in delightful and confusing ways! Here's one of my Blue Ameraucana cockerels for you to compare-just add feathered feet and a slightly poufy head:
