Bought five "pullets" at an auction. No probs. today I go to let the girls out and they're not waiting on me. All are in the coop, except one making patrols. I open the doors and do a head count. I call, but no one will leave the boxes. Finally they venture out, and after a minute the one in question grunts and they all run back in.

Two days ago I had no question that it was a pullet. Now...?

I'm pretty sure that the bird is a pullet. I don't see any large comb/wattles, or any pointy hackle or saddle feathers. There are also no sickle feathers in the tail or patchy coloring indicative of a male.

Ok that's what I was thinking too! Her comb is bigger and redder than the other sussex(es?) but not what I thought a rooster would be. I'm new to chickens so every day is an exciting adventure in ignorance. :D
