It's not always as easy as that.
Chickens like to be confusing.

This one is confusing me because all of her tail feathers are pointed. And her comb and wattles are twice as big as the others that are the same age.

Rhode Island pullets do get a fair amount of comb pretty fast.
She's beautiful. I love the colour.

And what is wrong with being a rookie? We all had to start somewhere. I have had chicken for five years and I had one stump me this year. I have one for sure sign to sex chickens. If it lay eggs it is a hen and if it crows its a rooster.

My first cockerel got through 10 months before I was kindly told he was a male by someone who didn't even keep chickens.

It was obvious by then, of course, but I'd had chickens for at least a year and I still couldn't recognize a cockerel when I saw one. He had spurs, saddle feathers, a huge comb, you name it.



And Rhode Islands is definitely a breed that can cause some confusion.

I have had chickens for years and I still question. No need to sound negative toward someone asking a question.

I agree and you should never feel like you shouldn’t ask questions. We all stand to learn from the questions.
