pullet or hen?

When do you stop referring to female chickens as pullets and start calling them hens?

At 1 year old, they officially become hens.

When it gets a job & can support itself. Just kidding. Im new to the chicken thing, but I would guess when they start laying eggs??? maybe not sure. I know I was of no help at all. But now I can watch this thread & find out my self

Technically it's like Kooshie said; a pullet becomes a hen at a year old, a cockerel becomes a rooster at a year old.
Having said that, I started referring to my pullets as hens when they started laying eggs and paying their own way.
