We bought unsexed day old chicks about 6 weeks ago and they are finally to the age where the breeder said i should be able to tell them apart. Only thing is.... i am not really sure how to do that. Any tips on how to tell the boys from the girls?

Here is an Ameraucana that i am pretty sure is a girl:

And a silver laced wyandotte that i think is a boy:

I am basing my guesses on comb color and temperament. Are these reliable indicators at 6 weeks of age? Any other methods i can use? Thanks!

    I'll be in the barn!
I think your guesses are correct. Typically, you look for redness in the comb before laying age. That usually means cockerel, but tere can be some early bloomers. Also watch feathering for anything that signifies rooster: pointy hackle feathers, saddle feathers, sickle tail feathers.

Thanks! I am hoping for mostly hens, but 4 out of 6 are showing some redness of the comb [IMG] only 1 with signs of pointy saddle feathers, though.

    Any opinions about these 2?

I am no expert, but to me it looks like one of each. the one with the larger comb being the male. I think I also see the start of saddle feathers....

Also, I didn't realize this when I started this thread, but there is an entire section of the forum for help with determining breed and gender. It's a little further down, if you want to try looking for help there.
