We recently got several types of pumpkins and put them out for decoration. Normally they are busted up as chicken feed once decorative use completed. This year the chickens decided to go after intact pumpkins, but of only one variety. The preferred variety is much deeper orange, almost shiny, and the meat is much thicker than with pumpkins used to make jack-o-lanterns. The only obvious negative is the lesser volume of seeds. The chickens initial pecking efforts where to get at seeds with balance of meat targeted after seeds consumed.
