ok..someone gave me a little puppy..apparently its a shihtzu/border collie mix. well, after they dropped him off, they sent me a message saying that he had scabies a few weeks ago but they are gone now. i am also looking at this little guy and he appears to have horrible dandriff and is very bloated. what do i do with him? i am assuming he has worms but now i am afraid he still has scabies. there are no sores at all, just missing fur and dandruff.
we had a dog with scabies years and years ago and it spread to my kids and was a horrible nightmare to get rid of!!!!

oh yikes, I don't know if I'm much help... It's Saturday, so probably can't get to a vet. I would worm him, but don't know otherwise. Our new little kitties gave us all ringworm last year, oh what fun that was. All of us had to go to urgent care...yuck. Good luck.

Scabies in dogs is called mange and it is contagious to other dogs and potentially humans (this form anyway). It is VERY expensive to treat!! But it will only spread and get worse and it is horribly uncomfortable for the dog. Please get it checked as soon as possible.

ive got the wormer covered and i just spoke to the lady who had him and she said that hes been treated and doesnt have it anymore..im just wondering what this dandruff is and if it is a sign of scabies.

Worms are usually treated, then retreated around 7-10 days later. If his tummy is bloated, id be its worms. Dont know about the scabies, but maybe the dandruff is comming because he wasnt on a good diet.

could be..i am wondering about this little guy..something isnt right.

Don't know if you guys have this in the states but there is spot flea treatment called Advocate (Bayer) which now treats scabies, which works beter than all the shampoo treatments. I think you can only buy it at the vets here in the uk, but its very good.

Scabies is a form of mange, but the only way to be 100% sure what kind is a skin scraping from a vet. Some manges are spread to people as well so get a vet to look. Don't rely on what the woman told you. As far as deworming, a vet can do a fecal(or you can take a sample) to determine what worms the pup may have. If it is a Border collie mix, be sure NOT to use ivermectin dewormer. Herding breeds tend to be sensetive to this and can cause seizures.

i am a meanie and decided to give him back...i do not want to take any chances!
