Puting a chicken down

What is the best way to put a chicken down? Quick so they don't suffer?? We don't have any guns--is that the best way??

Axe to the neck. Severs spinal cord and instant death. The body does convulse and move as muscles fire randomly. But they are dead. Sorry if this is graphic, but most quick and humane way.
