This has really taken the hassle out of chicken keeping - no mess or waste, keeps rats out and the grain dry.

Thanks so much for the hard work that went into that tutorial. This weekend I'll be working on the deluxe house my dad is building my chickens, and this will be perfect. I'll be making a trip for supplies and will update the thread if I manage to get it built soon.

how does it keep rats out?

There is a cap you can put on at night - if that rats are agile enough to get in.

Initially I thought the shape would make it hard for rats to get in - but I found that rats can be pretty persistent (and agile) - so I added the cap to stop this.

It also stops spillage - so that it doesn't attract rats in the first place.
