Hi I'm new to this forum but I've been keeping poultry for a while now and I decided to move on to quail. I bought a few fertile eggs and I have them cookin' in the incubator now. Me and my dad started working today converting an old rabit hutch into a coop for them once out of the brooder and I spent a while browsing the coop designs on here. Some are fantastic!!!

We decided to go for a playhouse style coop with a run beside our hens. My questions were:

    a. Does the coop have to be raised of the ground?
    b. What size would 12 quails comfortably live in? (we arn't short on space!!! lol)
    c. Is it true that Corturnix can't perch? I've heard of that one before!!!

    thanks, Alex

So you're trying your hand at Coturnix, eh? [IMG] Good choice! I'm sure Monarc23/Niki will be here soon, too. Where are you located?
A rabbit hutch is good for quail, and if you have many quail (and you will) you may find that keeping them off the ground on 1/2" wire will make it easier to keep them clean. They are susceptible to bugs found in the soil, but it's purely up to you.

Figure 1sf per bird for space requirements, but more is always good.

Coturnix can perch, but they are generally ground dwellers and don't seem to care for the branches that I put in their pen.

Niki has a wonderful thread dedicated to Coturnix...
