I feed my chickens cracked corn, to help warm them, mornings and evenings. The last bag we bought was supposed to be cracked and wasn't. Can chickens eat whole corn? I ran some through the blender to break it up. We did a chicken dipping yesterday, their legs, especially my roo, were very hard scaled. Dipped them in an oil. How often should that be done? Thanks, y'all!

Be careful feeding corn to keep a chicken warm.

If you feed more that .05% BW as corn the BTU Levels are so high that the birds my Spontaneous Combust!!! This is good if you want fresh scrambled eggs, but is not good for the longevity of the hen.

You have a number of questions there. The oil question could be better answered in the disease treatment forum.

Mine get corn and egg laying pellets as their feed. I have been doing this for over 2 years and they are fine. I tried the hen scratch and they wouldn't touch it. They like what they like and the corn hasn't hurt them at all. I have also read where the corn doesn't really keep them warm.

The corn is best when it is cracked for them.

You don't have to dip their feet and legs in oil unless you are having a problem.

Those hard scales are there to protect the feet and legs.

I don't feed whole corn but I have young birds and one banty that can't swallow it. I have know people who do feed a little of it mixed in with their other stuff but I would think it very hard to digest and thus pretty much useless as well as a waste of $$$.

If you feed them corn, give them cigarettes and they spontaneously combust, would you have smoked chicken. [IMG][/img] I will be watching this post for comments about oiling a chickens legs. I may use Dionne's Frost Proof on my single combed birds but I've never heard of worrying about legs. It's my understanding that if they have a flat roost they lower their body over their feet and legs so the cold isn't an issue.
