Currently we were given 3 hens and a rooster. I am still super new to the chicken world but thank God for BYC lol ! So I was told the hens are Black austrolorps and the rooster is Salmon Flavor? Idk if that's correct lol

A lady online just offered be 6 hens and a rooster that are Hyline Browns?

Please tell me is it ok to have the two different breeds? I'm going more for eggs but would love to hatch some out eventually! Will that be a problem with two roosters ?!

Will two roosters be a problem ( should add that my rooster was kept with another that are the same breed as him and they got along like pals lol)

Is the Hyline Brown a good layer?
Help! :) thank you!!!!!

That would make a total of 9 hens for 2 roosters....not a good thing. You should have 1 roo for every 10-12 birds. With a second rooster there might be some real fighting going on plus the fact that your hens would be overrun by too much mating. Not a good idea.

Also if you decide to go ahead with the new flock be sure to quarantine them from your current flock just in case there's any disease, etc., that might spread.

I can't help you on the Hyline Brown breed...I have Black Australorps only. Wishing you all the very best!

I appreciate the response, I was also thinking not enough hens for two roosters but is it ok to mix the two breeds if I just kept my current roo:):) he's my boy so I surely would wanna keep him lol

Well, if you're not into "show birds" (I know I'm not!) why not? It would be interesting to see what kind of little fuzzy-butts you get out of that cross!!

I think I will be keeping my rooster I have currently because I love him haha but glad to know that it would probably be ok for the hens!!!

One more question! They have a duck they were gonna give me too lol!! What the heck do I do with the duck!? I want it but I know nothing about them
Are they ok with the rooster and hens?

I can only speak for myself, but I wouldn't advise mixing ducks or turkeys with your chickens...

Hello, again. We met in the New Member introductions. Yes, different breeds will mix together just fine (I have Black Australorps, Black Sex Links, Buff Orpingtons, and Easter Eggers all mixed together and there have been times when I've had more than a dozen breeds mixed together), but you need to be careful about the number of roosters you have. The recommended ratio is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. More than that can quickly led to aggression, fights, and over-bred and battered hens. Hyline Browns are one of many labels used by some hatcheries for their Red Sex Link hybrids. They are produced by crossing Rhode Island Red roosters with Rhode Island White hens. The chicks can be sexed upon hatching (males are whitish and females are reddish), and they are egg laying machines (better than either parent breed). Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
