Question about feather colors/genes....

Hi I'm not sure where a good place to ask/post this is, so I just decided to ask it here. I hope that's OK...Anyways, I have a buff barred Cochin bantam rooster (he isn't completely buff barred..he still has a lot of faint black barring in his saddle feathers, leg feathers, tail feathers, and belly..) and I was wondering, if I crossed him to a blue Cochin bantam hen, is there a possibility i could get some blue barred chicks?

i'm not the most proficient on the genetics but from my understanding Yes, you would get some barred blue chicks (not necessary pure blue), but all your chicks would be sex-linkd (if he's not a sex linked barred to begin with) and all the barred would be males but any breeding after that would not be sex linked so you could then end up with barred hens and roosters. it would then likely takes many generations of selective breeding of get true blue barred.

Thanks. Wait, they would be sex-linked? I thought the hen had to be barred in order to make sex-linked chicks...and if they did turn out to be sex linked, the males would be blue with a white head spot, right?

as i said i'm not the most proficient on it but the sex linking is dependent on several factors, and both male and female have to have a sex-link 'trait' barring is one of those traits.

Barring only works in black sex linking if it's the female that's barred. Check out the "sex linked information" thread. Lots of useful info there, and plenty to keep the brain working on overdrive.

Love that site! My EE roo makes real nice BSL babies with my Dom and SLW gals. Supposedly, SLW is supposed to do RSL, not BSL, but they come out BSL... (unless I've read the chart wrong... gotta go back and check it out!)
