Hey there, anyone else ever had a hen that had spurs like a roo? I just noticed one of our older red hens has spurs...and pretty big ones too. Just curious if this is common or why this would happen. In every other way she is a typical hen. [IMG]How odd!!

It's common (and even required) in some breeds. less common in other breeds, but it does occur.

Hmmm, interesting. She is a New Hampshire Red if that makes a difference. I had never heard of that. None of her siblings (hens) have them.

I had a silver polish hen with spurs (about 2 inches long), and my dad had a game hen that we had to trim every now and then because her spurs curved back up into her legs ( about 4 inches long).
