At TSC today to get some chicken food and saw a bag of rolled oats for horses. Just wondering how this differs from human food grade rolled oats?

You do not want to eat the horse rolled oats, just one look at it will tell it's it's completely different than the kind you have in your pantry!

oats do normally have the hull still on them, and oat hulls are difficult to remove (and totally inedible for us, not to mention nasty in your mouth!). There are machines that will hull oats -- that's how they hull the oats they use for making oatmeal, or oat flour, for human consumption. The machinery is expensive, though. Back when people used to grow their own oats to eat, they grew naked oats, or hulless oats. But these have a lower yield than the hulled varieties, so aren't grown commercially in large amounts.

Thanks! I wonder - would chickens like eating them like this?

It cost more for rolled oats but just about all livestock and wild birds love them! Better than corn! High in fiber as well!
