I just finished my coop, the chicks are in the brooder in the garage, and we saw a raccoon on our back fence!

We've lived here for seven years and this is the first raccoon we've ever seen here. How do they know?

There must be varmint spies in the neighborhood.

I had a live trap and must of loaned it out because now I can't find it.

My shotgun is too loud so I'll have to keep the bow handy.

same here! We have lived in our neighborhood almost 8 years, never saw a raccoon then less than one week after getting the gals - I saw one 1-1/2 blocks away! They were coming up the storm drains. Went out and bought locks for the coop & reinforced everything...
 
Coons are everywhere. Most people don't see them in the daylight, so they incorrectly assume that their birds are safe. Coons and coyotes are some of the most adaptable animals. Nearly as bad as rats and mice.
