i read in a book that you cant raise chickens ducks and turkeys in the same area because of a disease the turkeys get from the chickens and ducks. does anyone raise turkeys with other poultry and if so, have you ever dealt with this disease. I want to get turkeys, but im worried about this disease. Thanks for your help. [IMG]

When I was new to poultry, I didn't know turkeys were suppose to be raised separate from chickens so I got 1 turkey chick and 2 chicken chicks. So far all has been good and they have lived together for 6 years without any health problems. You can house them together, but you are not suppose to. If you keep them with chickens they do have a possibility of getting blackhead. I have heard that it stays in the ground for a while too. I've never had problems with it, but I don't plan on housing anymore turkeys with chickens. One turkey is enough for me,(she eats alot more than chickens)
Oh, and I have no experience with ducks/waterfowl except seeing them at zoos and parks and what I've heard on here [IMG]

I have had no problem raising chickens and ducks together. I don't know about turkeys. Definitely not geese. The only thing I had that the geese didn't attack was some pygmy goats. They were the only ones the geese didn't attack.

I love ducks but my husband won't let me have them anymore.

ya i raise ducks with chickens now and they are fine together. i also have one goose who is still warming up to the chickens but loves the ducks.when i first got my goose i put a chicken i was also taking home with him and he really scared the little guy. My goose also hates cats, which isnt a bad thing

A couple I met at the local Farmer's Coop said they raised chickens, ducks and turkeys together without any problems. I've done research and Black Head can be carried by chickens and infect turkeys. Medication is available to prevent Black Head in Turkeys. I have been keeping my chickens and turkeys separated while in their youth (less than one year old). I have 2 hens, 11 laying pullets that will become hens by fall, two pullet turkeys (maybe one Tom), 11 young pullets (8 weeks) and two cockerels, three ducks on the way along with eight additional pullets. I intend to introduce the turkeys into the 'flock' by this coming winter. I'll let you know how it turns out. By the way, I've never raised turkeys or ducks, only chickens. I'm a "backyard" farmer!! hjh[IMG]
