    I live in the California high desert temperatures get to 110 and above sometimes. I would to raise a couple geese as pets. What would be the best breed of geese to raise.

    @BUTCH53 Welcome to BYC.

    I am not sure if one breed of geese would be better than another for living in the high desert, Mainly make sure they have plenty of shade and water to bath in in summer. They do like to graze grass but I live in the mountains of NC and haven't hardly any grass and have kept geese since 2007 with out any health issues. So it can be done.

    Best thing I can suggest would be to go here on BYC to the thread "where am I where are you" look up your state and talk to those who live in your area.

    Hi, new to the forum and soon to be first time geese owner. It is even hotter where we live! Indio CA HOT HOT HOT last summer hit 126!! But I do see a few geese living on ranches around the desert here so I know they will make it. I'll be reading this thread with interest for tips on how to keep them happy and cool (well, coolish)
    One thing I'm thinking about trying is these little irrigation sprayers. We call them micro sprayers or micro emitters. I think they would be helpful. Like little showers. they would be about 18 inches above the ground. Do you think they would work/help?

    well I am a complete novice and still don't have any geese but I have been asking the same question. What are the best geese for hot climate. Here is what others have told me
    Pretty much all geese do ok in hot weather if they have adequate shade and LOTS of FRESH water.
    Cotton Patch geese might be better in hot climate since they were used for many generations in the south to weed cotton. But there is no date to confirm that, it is just speculation.
    Generally it is believed small and medium size geese do better in hot weather, large breeds and overweight geese will not do as well.
    again, I have no experience to say whether or not this is correct, only what I have heard second hand

    Cool fresh water seems to be the unanimously agreed upon most important thing.

    Would still love to hear from others who have geese in hot weather.
