Hello, I have three roughly Two-week old satin chicks, all are incredibly active when they’re awake. I noticed them doing a lot of napping today. When I go to pick up their poo (I do this about every 15-20 mins) I’ve noticed some very dark almost black dropping of the most rotten, foul smelling poop E v e r!

It started with one chick and now two. Almost every time I go to pick up poo there’s this new diarrhea around.

I keep them on a towel covered by a paper towel, feeding them non-medicated chick starter by Purina with occasional UltraKibble mixed in… I’ve only had them for three days now, so I have diluted Rooster Booster in their water that I planned on phasing out over the next few days. I got them from a local breeder.

No treats unless it’s boiled egg.

If I can get a picture of it I’ll update this thread with the poo

Please help me figure this out ;; I don’t want them to head downhill… and I certainly don’t want my freshly hatched chick sick!

Sounds a bit like cecal poop, which is runnier, darker, and way stickier than other poop.

Is it every poop, or are some poops normal?

I’m seeing a mixture, my yellow chick had it four times in a row earlier, my black had it twice in a row——

Am I really out here being a paranoid chicken mom Dx

Many of us are paranoid chicken mamas. You're in good company here!

Are they on medicated starter?

Do you see any blood in their poop at all?

Are they acting sick?

I ask because Coccidiosis is a real threat to young chickens. If they are not on medicated starter and you are very concerned, you can give them Corid without causing harm even if it isn't coccidiosis. Otherwise, medicated starter contains the same substance as Corid, so it would make bo sense to give both.

I, too, suspect plain old cecal poops, but keep an eye on it anyway. Usually the stools from Coccidia are bright red blood and don’t stink 1/10th as bad as cecal poop does, and aren’t usually super sticky either. The only poops as bad are broody poops! :sick
