I saw this posting on craigslist this morning, someone was asking for help because rats were killing many of their chickens in their barn. I never heard of rats killing chickens. Has anyone else?

Yes, but the rat population must be huge.

Never heard of this problem but there is a first for everything. I suggest they sit in the corner of the coop with a 22 longrifle at nite and when ur hear the chicken fightin them, turn on a light and start popen em. Or for a more humane way just put rat poison where the chickens cant get to it.

I know of someone who had ducks and the rats would come up out of the holes and grab the ducks. Ate what they could pull in the hole and leave the rest at the top of the hole. It was a clean place too, only took him 2 weeks with poision to get rid of them so it can happen.

Rats may kill one or two--if they can catch them--and will usually eat them on the spot. On the other hand, if someone has rats the chances are they may also have a weasel which will kill chickens in bunches and leave them.

Had a coon do that once. I had 4 Africna Blacks and he just ate the heads ans breast and left them layin the middle if the chicken house. Caught the coon the following nite and he was easily 30 pounds so never count them out.

He put the poison down the hole and covered it up with dirt then a big rock so ducks wouldn't get to it.
