Reactions to wood shavings?

We’re getting a bunch of broiler chicks next week and my husband used the plastic feed barrel to store wood shavings, mostly mahogany. Is there potential harm to the chicks if I wash it out carefully? I recall that some woods are not good for the birds.

Are the shavings dry? Are they shavings and not saw dust?
You want to avoid aromatic cedar and I would also avoid walnut shavings.

If you have actually shavings and not dust and they are dry, use them. They will be fine.

I was not intending to use (dry) shavings but was concerned about any harmful aromas or poisons from the wood that might transfer to the feed if I store it in the plastic barrel.
