My father-in-law bought our first hen (a bourbon) a few weeks ago at trade day. After a few days she was laying an egg here and there, and I mean all over the pen, and then EATING IT! I just knew she would never give us babies, since shes eating the fruits of her labor. Well to my surprise, she has been setting for about 9 days or so. Ok...so maybe an egg or two, right? No. Nine. She had ten and one was cracked and it disappeared. I would have never thought she would have laid, let alone set on nine eggs. Although I guess that just means I have that much to learn.

Very cool.

I happend upon a turkey book printed in 1920. It said they can lay as many as 18 and then sit on them. Also, the turkey hens only lay if they have been bred. Yea you, Bourbon reds are on my list. This is the breed I will buy when we are ready to add turkeys. Right now I am working on hatching guineas.
