(3) What breeds do you have? Rhode Island Reds (or some genetic variant thereof)

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? the almighty google

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? gardening and making jewelry

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. My husband and I (and our cat) recently relocated to the Blue Ridge Mountains from Virginia Beach. We have almost 30 acres (20 of it forested), and wanted to do something with it. So we are planting a huge garden and raising 11 egg laying hens. When I come home from work, I love to watch the chickens interacting with each other and exploring their environment. It's very entertaining! I call it my "chick flick".

Welcome to the BYC flock. Wow -what a great place to raise chickens. Yes, Chick TV can't be beat, new shows every day, no reruns, live entertainment, no cable or satellite bills - what's not to like?

and congratulations on getting your own flock.

Your description of "chick flick" pretty much sums it up. They do uplift our spirits :)

Good luck with all.

You probably already have explored the site, but may be interested also in our gardening forums.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sounds fantastic where you are now with all the acreage. I'm sure your chickens are very happy there. Must be super to have that much room. Chick flicks are great I often sit out with my chickens just watching them go about their business something very therapeutic about it.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your flock and getting your garden planted up. Be sure to ask any questions everyone here to help and very friendly.
Enjoy BYC :frow

Thanks for the welcome. Sad news today. 11 is now 10. My inlaw's black lab got loose while I was showing the chicks to my nephew, and the dog lunged into the brooder and snatched my little Gloria right in front of me :-( I pried her out of the dog's mouth immediately (got some nice bruises in the process), but her neck was already broken. She died shortly thereafter. It was literally heartbreaking. My husband took her and buried her because I just couldn't cope.

I don't know how I'm going to keep the remaining ten safe when it's time to move them into our coop (a converted shed). Right now I'm thinking barbed wire and dog-seeking missiles.

Hello!

Welcome to BYC and the coop! There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to joined the BYC family. Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss. :hugs Poor little Gloria, dogs can be brutal.
