I'm from South Louisiana. Just started with 6 hens. (3 Reds 2 black sexlinked and 1 americauna), all are 3 months old now. Wanted to say hello to everyone and thanks for all your post which helped me select my flock. We raised chickens when i was a young boy and watching my kids enjoy these birds reminds me of my childhood. My boys are already asking me about multiplying our flock. Should i have gotten a rooster when i got my hens? When is the best time to introduce a rooster and what would you recommend for the hens i have

Welcome to BYC. I think Cochin roosters tend to be the least aggressive , if you want to have fertile eggs to sell or hatch. Otherwise hens will lay just as well, if not better without a rooster harassing them .

I'm glad you joined our community!

Roosters are not necessary in order for hens to be happy and lay normal, non-fertilized eggs. If you want to hatch some eggs from your flock or watch the entertaining antics of roosters, though, then I would recommend getting one.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

X3 A rooster is not needed unless you want fertile eggs. Hens lay just as well if not better without a rooster around. Some Roosters can be aggressive toward humans. So just keep this in mind.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!
