Hi everyone. We just rescued 2 3 month old silkies about 2 weeks ago. Today I was just playing with them and I noticed there were egg like things on the feathers below her ear. I was wondering if those WERE eggs, but my mom just thought it was their new feathers growing in (They were getting attacked by adult birds). Then, I went inside. About 5 minutes later I went back to just calm myself that they weren't eggs, and I was looking for more. But then I noticed these TINY yellowish bugs crawling on the feathers, and skin of one of the silkies. They weren't everywhere- but I could find them. They are now living with my health flock of 12, and I could NEVER cull them if these bugs spreaded. Last spring I saw one on my polish daisy, and we couldn't find more so we just forgot about it. Now, since I saw a lot, I'm wondering what to do! If these were regular bugs, they would've died already? We had a little snow and freezing temp. for the last week, but today it is about 40 degrees F. Anyone know what these are?
Thanks.

without a pic its hard to say.. I would guess its lice or mites though.. check around the vent and see if there are eggs there too.

and you should ALWAYS quarantine new birds or you may have to cull the entire flock... not for the mites or lice but if yo has dome other disease come into your coop it may be necessary I will look for the thread started by purple chicken and southernbelle about the need to quarantine

I find that Sevin works the best for me. It's a powder in the garden center. Sprinkle it on your chickens after they roost. Then do again in 3 (?) weeks.

The kind of Ivermectin I use for worming is the cattle pour on. You can get it at tractor supply.
I use 6 drops for large fowl and 3 drops for bantams.
Spread the feathers at the cape of the neck and find skin for the drops, try not to get it on the feathers, just skin.
The Ivermectin comes with a nice curved syringe for this.

It will kill internal as well as external parasites.
Egg withdraw time is 10 days

Hope this helps

I can 100% tell you its lice you are dealing with and yes the white things you are seeing stuck to their faces are eggs.
Its hard to get the eggs off so you have to wait for them to hatch to kill them.
So dust or do ivermectin now then in about 1-2 weeks dust them again.
Keep doing this till you see no more eggs or bugs.
