Chicken of Tomorrow was a contest to improve chicken meat production. During World War 2 there was a shortage of red meat causing a national food problem and chicken was seen as a way to fill the gap for that shortage. This video showcases the modern meat poultry beginnings. I found it entertaining and informative.

    Very interesting.

For some reason I hear a little voice in the back of my head saying: "Careful for what you wish for, you may get it."

Cool link. Thanks for the video.

That guy narrating was in every video produced around that era.

It was very interesting. Felt like I was watching a movie in Junior High many moons ago.

So have our practices changed so much from the "good ol' days"? I noted the high stocking density, the high protein feed, short growing period, large trucks with crates of birds, high volume processing. Real agriculture producing products to feed a country. How have we gone from the farmer being a great American hero to being the villain?

I wonder how many people, after watching this.. will be in search of a red cornish, and some NH hens to replicate the cross that won this competition?

Does anyone know how many years they continued this contest? and how long it took for the CX birds to conquer? I'm guessing that either the last year it happend, or close to it, was the year the magical cross was made.. I wonder if the CX birds finished 100 points.?

I, for one, would be really interested in seeing the more specific stats on what was entered, and how they finished... even though it was 60 years ago.

Back when New Hampshires were commonly, actually meaty, worthy birds. . . .

    Neat video. [IMG]
