What exactly are Rhode Island Blue chickens and are they dependable? (Personality and egg laying)

Rhode Island Blues are a combination between Rhode Island Reds and Australorps. They should be a high production (200-250 large eggs a year), brown egg laying breed. They come in varieties of blue, black, and red colors.

ETA: Rhode Island Reds Crossed with Blue Orphintons should also make a Rhode Island Blue.

A hybrid only called RI Blue by one hatchery (Mt. Healthy) under THAT name instead of production blue as others call them, I think.. stated as the RIR cross to blue Australorp on their web site. They will show up at feed stores under whichever name the hatchery they order from uses..

Should be as dependable as any hatchery hybrid done for high production..

My RIB is a calm, sweet girl. She lays every day. She took a little longer to mature but maybe that’s because she is much larger than the others.

Hmm, I have production blues. They're a mix between RIRs and blue australorps. Not sure if they're the same but they are great layers. They sure friendly and pretty quiet.

Not sure if this was in reply to me but I'll share anyways. They're super sweet. The one with the red on her face and down her chest is such a cuddle bug. I think shes a little blind because she gets lost (separated from the group) sometimes while free ranging. I'll go pick her up to bring her back and she will lay her her in my neck like shes thankful. She her sister,also production blues, will make sure a buddy is with her always. She wasnt in the coop at night once and 2 of her sister came out and led her there. They really are the sweetest ones I have ever had. Super quiet girls. I get 6 out of 7eggs daily from them. Nice big eggs and the egg color is a creamy color. They are big birds though. Mine are around 8lbs. They dont al have red. Some have none,some just a little,and 1 girl has grey instead of red. The picture of the eggs shows our production blue egg next to my EEs.

Thank you for sharing! My question was to anyone that has them and wanted to give the rest of us insight to them. You make them sound like wonderful birds. I wish I wasn't so keen on having bantams instead of large fowl (and those are big girls) or I would be very tempted to get a few.

My Sweet Georgia Brown RIB. Eggs average 54g. One brown egg every day. Sweet, docile, quiet. As soon as she sees me she comes running hoping for treats or a little conversation. If I were a chick I would want to be raised by her.
