I have a flock of 24 RIR hens and one rooster. They are almost 6 months old.
Question.
Why are some of my hens combs larger than others?

I would guess that if all are laying, some are just genetically predisposed to have larger combs.

A hen's comb gets bigger and redder when she is ready to lay eggs.
At 6 months old, you might have some laying (big combs) and some that are maturing more slowly (smaller combs, not laying yet.)
