So out of the blue, one of my gold comet hens went broody. On a whim, I got some fertile eggs. The we're laid by gold comet hens with a RIR rooster. I'm curious about what the offspring will be like, and especially if I will be able to sex then by color. Any info would be much appreciated.

No, you will not be able to sex them by color. The Gold Comet is a sex link. You cannot use sex links to make sex links. The genetics are not set up right.

To complicate it even further, Gold Comet is just a marketing name. Maybe the hatchery you got them from can tell you what breeds went into them, but even if you knew that, the genetics are still not set up right to get sex links. You should get pretty red chickens that lay well.

Cackle makes theirs from a proprietary Production Red rooster and a Rhode Island White hen.

Hubbard Golden Comets are a commercial quality egg laying hybrid.

E-fowl sells some that are from a New Hampshire rooster and a White Rock hen.
