She a hen but not a very good Rhode Island Red.Hello all,
I just brought back my 1st place RIR hen (I hope) from the fair. She never has shown signs of a rooster before but now she is pecking the laying hens neck. This is her to the right. Her head is a little bigger then the other RIR. Hope shes a she.
Thanks!
I have raised hundreds of Red's and had very few aggressive ones.Looks like a female. RIRs are one of the more aggressive breeds. She'll probably rank high in the chicken hierarchy!![]()

I think your thinking about Hatchery/ Production Reds.
)Are you talking about Rhode Island Reds as in the breed from a breeder or the birds called a Rhode Island Red/ production red from hatcheries? She is a hen. RIR roos are notoriously aggressive. I have a couple of RIR hens, and they get along fine with the rest of the flock. Maybe she is reasserting her position since she was at the fair for a day. I also agree she is not all RIR.
Yes I was referring to what I call the "commercial RIR" which as others have said is what this bird appears to be. It's really quite sad on how hard Heritage Rhode Island Reds can be to find. I have been fortunate to own a few over the years, though. Very nice birds with a much more pleasurable temperament than these production birds.I have raised hundreds of Red's and had very few aggressive ones.
