Today my daughter convinced me to put a roly-poly (sp?) bug in the chick brooder to see what they would do. We have 4 10-day old chicks. We put the roly poly along with some dirt from the garden in a mason jar lid and waited...and after a minute, the fun ensued.
That poor bug got pecked, dropped, tossed, stolen, and then finally gobbled up. I had to move the food and water out because of all the craziness!
Of course, we proceeded to do this about 4 more times, and also added one centipede and half an earthworm.
My question: will garden dirt suffice as grit? They did eat it, but I hope it won't hurt them? Do we need to find some sand or something pronto, or should they be okay??
And finally, are they too darn young for this stuff?!!
Thanks!
