I currently have 7 laying hens with a 7' long 2'x4' layed flat for the roost. There is a 1"x10"x7' a foot below it for the poop board. My question is that I have 6 new pullets that I am about to add to the perm coop. How much roost space do I need for 13 hens and any ideas for adding more roost space? Thanks.

Well, I've heard about one foot per bird is right... so you definitely need more pole space. Can you post a pic of inside of your coop? Anyway to staggar like a ladder-type configuration?

I just retired two mop handles... closet rods from the Re-Store...
I think I remember 10 inches of roost space for each chicken.

I have two 2x4's laid wide side up (big flat surface). They are both 7.5 feet long. I have 12 hens and I thought at one foot per bird I need 12 feet.

What I have witnessed is all the poo on one end or the other. When I spy on them, they are all huddled together in one area, thus the specific piles of poo.

I think they may enjoy the one foot/bird, but mine don't seem to 'need' it. They prefer to crowd together :)
