So, I've asked about our now 2 month old chicks before (jury's still out... I have some new pics of them, too!), but this post is primarily about our ~5 month old barnyard mix, Slush, who we thought was a she, but evidence is growing the other direction. Her saddle and neck feathers are very cockerelish, as is the increasingly large comb. I think spurs may be developing as well. Plus, she/he mounted one of her hens last night. No crowing, though!

No question about Slush and very little doubt about the other two - cockerels.

What's the reasoning behind our chicks looking like boys? (I'd like to learn... most of the stuff I'd been reading for reference seemed to indicate pullets.)

Very large, well developed cushion combs and patchy coloring.

Hi. New to the forums. Big guy is def a roo. Out of the 2 chicks, id say the lighter one is too but the other a hen maybe.... Pics of saddle feathers would help too. The only way I tell with mixes, is saddle feathers, colour of combs and change in colouring as they get older. If their colours don't change, then hen, and lastly, stance. The way they hold themselves. Roos tend to stand more upright. I can usually have a 95% success in sexing our chicks by a week old using just comb and stance.
