4 years ago we had a rooster which was behaving normally and looked healthy. I noticed that he started making a strange noise from time to time but at first I didn't pay attention untill he started doing it constantly. I would tell him to stop but he didn't. I am talking about very annoying high pitched sound similar to this:

He didn't stop producing it untill day we slaughtered him. I always wondered what was going on. No other chicken we have or had is/was making such noises. What do you think was wrong with him? What was he trying to tell us?

Did he do that rather than crowing? It could have been a growth in his throat that changed the sound. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't stop just because you told him to, lol.
and Welcome to BYC, by the way!

It's hard to say. Did he seem to be breathing ok? Chickens can make some of the strangest and most annoying or funny sounds. Maybe that was his alert noise? I had a rooster who sounded like the fire whistle whenever a hawk flew over. I currently have a cockerel who sounds like a Peking duck whenever he gets startled. Chickens can be so weird. :D
