My Black Copper Marans roo is reaking havoc on my hens. He has been mounting them and tearing out all their feathers on their backs and holes in their sides. What can I do to stop this?
Is there some way to make his spurs and claws less sharp? I know with cats they have glue on covers for their nails. Is there an option like this for chickens?
He will still tear up your hens even with his spurs trimmed. There is a product for hens called a saddle that can help their back. But with so much mating (serial raping) going on, the saddles could get displaced, and the hens will still be stressed from all the mating. You need to separate him from the ones with the holes on their sides so they can heal. I only keep roosters that do not overmate and are good to the hens.
