Does anyone know what the average ratio of hens to roosters is?(hatched out 5, 1 died) What should I see when trying to tell the sex of the chicks? Thank ya'll for the answers last night on helping a chick to hatch. The little bit of help I gave was just enough and the chick is alive and well.

There's no hard and fast rule, but most people tend to expect a 50/50 mix. Of the last eight I had, five have turned out to be roosters. I'm not complaining though, because the roosters simply end up on the dinner table. In fact, my current coop is going to be named the "Breakfast Coop" and the next one I build will be the "Dinner Coop", and that's where all excess roosters will be homed, at least at night when they're not free ranging.

Also, you find certain breeds are easier to sex than others, so you may end up having to wait for your boys to start crowing. The roosters will also develop sharp pointed feather just where the backs and tails meet.

Hope this helps
